Lark arrived home with a bouncing child beside him and a chicken that smelled like heaven on the floor near her feet. Thank goodness he’d managed to get a precooked one!

“Just don’t stomp on that bird!”

He doubted Lucy had heard him; she was out the door and racing up the steps to the house the moment the car stopped. Lark retrieved the chicken, plus a few other bags, and headed on in.

The chicken was going to be served at room temperature—it was already cooked to perfection—but he was in charge of the potatoes and some other vegetables, plus heating up the gravy. It didn’t sound like too much, but then he wasn’t exactly a whiz in the kitchen.

And he needed to have a bit more of a tidy-up. He kept the place as clean as he could, but he wasn’t exactly used to having company over.

So long as there were no other distractions aside from racing out to feed the horses, he’d be fine.

And so long as our guest shows up. Something told him that she wasn’t entirely comfortable at the prospect of spending the evening here with them.

He hated to admit that he was hoping more than anything else that she would show.

“When’s dinner, Daddy?”

Lark groaned.

“It’s only four o’clock,” he called back. “Dinner’s a while off but you can have a snack now.”

Lucy wandered into the kitchen as he started unloading the groceries.

“When’s she coming?”

Lucy looked thoughtful, climbing up onto the counter to watch him while he sorted through the bags.

“Sophie?”

“Yeah,” she said, kicking her heels on the cupboards.

He ignored it. Her mother would have told her off for banging, but so long as she was happy sitting there yapping to him, he wasn’t going to be too hard on her. Her being happy was all he cared about.

“I told her to come by after six, I think,” he told her.

“And did you ask anyone else for dinner?”

Lark stopped what he was doing and looked at her. He placed his hands one on either side of her and leaned in so they were touching foreheads.

“Lucy Anderson, are you trying to tell me something?”

She giggled, but she didn’t move. Instead she pressed her forehead closer so that their noses touched. “No.”

“Like that you have a boyfriend you wanted me to ask over?”

“No!” she squealed this time, wriggling so much he grabbed her and held her in place.

“Are you sure?”

He tried not to laugh too hard. They hadn’t goofed around like this, joked, in what felt like forever.

Maybe he wasn’t doing as badly in the dad stakes as he’d thought.

Lucy rolled her eyes. “I’m too young to have a boyfriend, Dad.”

“Well, if you’re sure…”

Lucy angled her head and watched him again. More intently. “Does this mean Sophie is your girlfriend?”

Oh, heavens, no. He hadn’t meant to give her that idea. Not at all.

“No, darlin’, Sophie’s just a friend. Remember I told you she worked with animals? And that she was helping me with those horses we picked up when it was
